My name is Salma and I am a first year architecture student at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. Now many questions might come up to your mind: Who is she ? Where is she from? Why did she choose architecture ? Why study in Spain ? …..
First of all I am a 19 years old moroccan girl, the oldest child, I have a 15 years old younger brother, a very passionate mother and an incredibly inspiring father. I come from Rabat, the capital of Morocco.
This is my first year studying abroad far from my home and my country, it’s both an exciting and a difficult experience, growing up i’ve always been surrounded with my family members, they’ve always been there for me in hard times but also in happy moments, now being here alone you can’t count on anybody but yourself which at the same time is pretty great because you’re completely independent and responsible in so many ways.
The main reason why i chose to study in Spain is the culture, experiencing new things has always been one of my ultimate goals – it’s actually in the top of my bucket list of “the things i want to do during my life”- so visiting the city of Valencia getting lost in the alleys of El Carme, walking by Colón and Xàtiva and getting mesmerized by the beauty of the old buildings that stand as proof of the strong history of this city.
I’ve always been told by my friends and family that I have an artistic soul, I never really understood this statement until coming here. I am the type of person that senses beauty and sees it in very simple day-to-day things, for instance walking around my neighbourhood “a dar un paseo” seeing old ladies out around a table talking and laughing, couples taken by their conversations, bars and restaurants full of voices, sounds, and smells … brings me a lot of joy.
To conclude and go back to our main point, I chose architecture because it’s a field where I can express myself freely, let my imagination flow and bring my ideas into reality. Since high school I was going to continue my studies in the medical field until last year when I decided to choose architecture since it’s the career that I’m most interested in. Besides, I believe that through buildings the architect stays alive which is one of my aspirations too.
