R3- THE GREAT WAVE

One of the fields that i always loved since very young, is the art of painting, i find it pretty astonishing to be able to transpose the ideas you have in your head into papers with so little materials; your hands, some painting, and a paper.

I used to paint a lot back home, thus I own so many paintings that i was not able to bring with me here to Spain. In fact, painting is a great way to expres your emotions, relax or even evacuate the pressure of life.

For all the reasons sited above i decided to talk about one of my favourite works;

The great wave is the work of the japanease painter Katsushika Hokusai. The painting was realized when he was 70 years old which is pretty impresive.

When people hear the name “Hokusai”, they automatically think of The Wave. Though uncommon at the time, the artist signed his work and distinguished himself as an incredible print-maker. He embodies the ukiyo-e style of art which aims to portray objects as if they were floating. It favours the representation of “light” subjects such as natural elements.

Hokusai was 70 years old when he made this print. It was part of a series entitled Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Let’s take a look at the most famous view of the mountain by focusing on The Wave

The most important components of this composition are the following ones: The wave obviously that comes in the first plan with a play of colors (dark and light blue ith some white on top). The Mount Fuji that is probably the most important element in the japanease culture, it’s the symbol of spiritual rest and pilgrimage. Finally the fishing boat trapped in the storm as emphasis of the of balance as the boat doesn’t seem like it’s about to sink but they are perfectly floating above water.

There are other paintings that i love particularly: The creation of adam (Michelangelo), Ceiling of Cappella Sistina Vaticana (Michelangelo), La Nuit Etoilée (Van Gogh)….
